Mayor Foster joined Long Beach Fire Department Chief Mike Duree, Long Beach Police Department Deputy Chief Robert Luna, and members of LBPD and LBFD for a ceremony at the Civic Center Police/Fire Memorial to commemorate the anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001 and honored those who lost their lives that day.

Remembering 9/11 this Sunday

This Sunday, we commemorate the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2001.  Please take a moment to remember the victims and the first responders who lost their lives that day. Some of the many events that are taking place on Sunday in Long Beach are listed below:

  • City of Long Beach Annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony: The annual ceremony will take place at the Police and Fire Memorial next to City Hall at the Civic Center Plaza at 9:30 a.m. Bells and sirens will ring at 10 a.m. for one minute as part of the National Moment of Remembrance.
  • 2011 Belmont Shore Car Show: This year’s annual car show will pay tribute to the police and firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11. Long Beach Fire Department and Long Beach Police Department vehicles will participate in a ceremony at 9:11 a.m. for a moment of silence. For more information visit www.belmontshore.org.
  • Kelly’s of Naples 9/11 Memorial BBQ: This fundraiser will benefit the Long Beach Fire Orphans and Widows Memorial Fund. The Memorial BBQ will take place from 12 p.m. –6 p.m. and features live entertainment. Call 562-433-4983 for more information. www.kellysrestaurantinc.com
  • Remember 9/11: This event will begin with a motorcycle ride in Orange County at 2:15 p.m. and will end at McKenna’s on the Bay at Alamitos Bay with a memorial ceremony, tribute concert and firework show. For more information visit www.remember911ride.com.
  • Healing with Hope: 9/11 Interfaith Remembrance: The South Coast Interfaith Council will hold an interfaith gathering at First Congregational Church, 241 Cedar Ave. at 4 p.m.  For more information call 562-983-1665 or email southcoastinterfaith@gmail.com.
  • Ground Zero in Long Beach: A 9/11 Memorial Art exhibit by Long Beach artist Ron Yates will be on display from Friday, Sept. 9 – Sunday, Sept. 11 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 624 Pacific Ave.  For more information call Ron Yates at 310-686-7928.
  • 9/11 Candlelight Vigil, Walk & Remembrance Ceremony: Organized by Long Beach community member Justin Rudd, the candlelight walk will begin at Bixby Park at 7 p.m. and will end in front of the World Trade Center in downtown Long Beach.  For more information email Justin@JustinRudd.com.
