Nancy’s Corner

Nancy Foster is passionate about making a difference in Long Beach. Read Nancy’s updates on her work and the people she meets in the community.

Judy Seal, Executive Director of the Long Beach Education Foundation, and I have been in contact at least five times a day working on the Save our Middle School Sports campaign.  She has some great news about the fundraising efforts!

“With two more generous donations, we have reached our goal to save Middle School Sports!  I am so pleased to share that the children in the Long Beach middle schools will be playing sports in the upcoming 2011-2012 school year!” – Judy Seal

Through this campaign our students and coaches know, deep down where it counts the most. Our community believes what they are doing is very important, that the community is behind them, and that we will try hard not to let these difficult times take away what they love the most.

The efforts and the generosity of so many have made this possible!  Thank You!

The Burbank Elementary classmates of Eric Chansy invited me to their tree planting event on Friday.

These fifth graders planted a guava tree in memory of him. Eric would eat guava at lunch every day.

There was a horrible car accident in June when his father had a heart attack while driving and ran into a tree. The crash killed Eric, his dad, his mom and a family friend. Eric’s brother walked away from the car accident with only a broken arm.

Eric’s loving aunt, who is a schoolteacher, will take on the responsibility of raising Eric’s two surviving siblings.

It was a very emotional time for these Burbank Elementary kids but they will always remember their friend Eric and care for this guava tree.

I took a few pictures of the kids planting the guava tree in Eric’s memory below.

We need to save our Middle School Sports in Long Beach!

Please join me to help out the Long Beach Education Foundation as we try to raise money to save middle school sports in our Long Beach Unified School District.

At the AES “The Power of You” festival on Saturday, the employees raised $19,130.09 to help our efforts to save Middle School Sports. AES added more money to round out the donation to $20,000 and then matched it with another $20,000! Last night, Tony Chavez of AES handed over the BIG check for $20,000. And BP also gave $20,000!

Please help! We still need to raise another $80,000 to save Middle School sports! Click here to donate online at the Long Beach Education Foundation website or visit www.lbusd.k12.ca.us/Community/Education_Foundation/.

With Tony Chavez of AES.

Assemblymember Bonnie Lowenthal nominated Nancy Foster for the 54th Assembly Woman of the Year.  Nancy was nominated because of her work in the community, especially for her advocacy in mental health.

Assemblymember Lowenthal held a reception on April 21 to honor all of the women who were nominated.
